The Spitfire might just be the most iconic World War 2 era fighter plane in the world. It's distinct elliptical wing design makes it recognizable to almost anyone who is even remotely familiar with fighter aircraft. It was famously praised as the plane that won the Battle of Britain for the United Kingdom, despite the more numerical Hawker Hurricane actually playing a larger role. It was used to engage the enemy fighters, while the Hurricanes dealt with the bombers, and it could go toe to toe with the famous German BF 109. It saw action in every theatre and stayed competitive throughout the entire war with multiple improvements.
