Lockheed P-38 Lightning

USAF Lockheed P-38J Lightning. Top Speed: 414mph/666kph. Armament: 1x Cannons 4x Machine Guns.
The "Forked-Tailed Devil" as it was claimed to have been called by the Germans by Allied propaganda, was the only extensively used fighter of any nation that had twin booms and a centralized cockpit. This not only gave the lightning a unique appearance in the skies of World War 2, it allowed all of its armament to be placed directly in front of the pilot without the need to synchronize the guns to fire through a propeller, increasing accuracy at long ranges. The twin booms also allowed more fuel to be carried on board, and this combined with drop tanks meant that the P-38 was an effective long range escort. It was the plane in which the United States' highest scoring ace of the war claimed all of his kills, with 40 Japanese aircraft shot down.
